Hazard Identification Analysis

  1. Home
  2. Process Safety and Risk
  3. HAZID
Overview

Hazard Identification Study (HAZID) is systematic, multi-disciplinary reviews carried out to determine potential hazards that may arise during operation of a process design, or execution of a work project. The technique considers each review area, by reference to an agreed set of Guide Words. Depending on the facility or operation phase that the HAZID focus on, a particular set of Guide Words will be established and agreed by HAZID team prior to the study.

Objective

Hazard Identification Study (HAZID) is the first step in Quantitative Risk Assessment. The objectives of study are to:

  • Identify major accident events that may lead to serious and immediate risk to health and safety of personnel;
  • Identify safety critical controls and procedural safeguards already incorporated into the design that will reduce the likelihood or severity of consequences related to the identified events;
  • Evaluate the adequacy of any engineering and procedural safeguards; and
  • Highlight the need for additional protective measures or recommend ways for mitigation of hazard/ identification issues raised.
Methodology
  • Multi-disciplinary team performs the HAZID workshop such as Representative of Management Board, technical/process engineers, the workshop facilitator and scribe from Berkeley Engineering, and etc. to ensure that the HAZID review was comprehensive.
  • Berkeley Engineering develops the HAZID Guide Words that were used in the HAZID workshop to initiate discussion within the HAZID team. The list of HAZID Guide Words will be agreed among review team prior to workshop commencement. The agreed action items were recorded on the HAZID worksheets.
